On Wednesday at 5.30 Evensong the Temple Church in London is celebrating what would have been John Tavener’s 75th birthday; he was my school friend and I will be speaking about him. I suddenly remembered what must be one of his very earliest compositions, a lovely hymn-tune written when he was 15 but never performed publicly or published. I’ve written it down just as he used to play it to us, and the choir will sing it. A Tavener première!
Music – John Tavener, including Mother of God, Magnificat, Nunc Dimittis and première: O Son of man
