Christ our Emmanuel
A lilting 3/4 metre carries the listener through this familiar Christmas story, beautifully depicted in a text by the composer. Rutter employs artful word-painting throughout, and the verse-refrain structure enables the compelling melody to soon become as familiar as any traditional carol of the season. Rutter Magnificat
Rutter’s Magnificat for soprano, choir and orchestra uses the traditional Magnificat text, based on the Virgin Mary’s prayer on learning she would give birth to Christ and extended with Marian prayers and poems chosen by the composer, to create a work reminiscent of outdoor processions in honour of the Virgin.

Rutter’s charming piece sets a secular text by the composer that emphasises the significance of music and harmony in an ephemeral world. A simple accompaniment figure in the piano provides the backdrop to alternating unison and polyphonic verses that manage to capture both nostalgia for what was and optimism for what is to come.
Christ the Lord is risen again
John Rutter’s original setting of this popular Easter hymn is resplendent and celebratory, with frequent metre changes that give a fresh feel to these historic words. Also available in Anthems for Choirs 4 and Ash Wednesday to Easter for Choirs, with a version for SSA and organ available in Anthems for Choirs 3. Orchestral scores… Read more »
