Lead, kindly Light

John has written a new unaccompanied choral piece with a text by John Henry Newman: Lead, kindly Light. The sheet music is out now, published by Oxford University Press, and it has been recorded by The Gesualdo Six. This short, moving piece is perfectly suited for our current times. Step-like movement in the melody reflects the speaker seeking light in the darkness, slow but steady in their way out of the ‘encircling gloom’.

Listen to Lead, kindly Light, sung by The Gesualdo Six:

John says:

“Sometimes when I’m working on one composition I find I have an idea for another one, and so it was with Lead, kindly Light, which came almost fully formed while I was writing A Pilgrims’ Prayer for the Three Choirs Festival. Lead, kindly Light is a short unaccompanied setting of John Henry Newman’s classic text, slightly related in mood and style to my setting of God be in my head. Delighted that it was premièred at the Three Choirs Festival on July 28th, at the same service as A Pilgrims’ Prayer. Two first performances in one day!”
