Part 2 Quiz Answers

How did you get on with the second part of this year’s Christmas Quiz? Did you find it more tricky than the first part? Did you get any of the connections right? Scroll down to find the answers…

The First _______:

  • Noel (The First Noel (or Nowell), arranged by David Willcocks)
  • Day (from The twelve days of Christmas, arranged by John Rutter)
  • Thing (from the line “The first thing that I will relate” in The truth sent from above by Ralph Vaughan Williams)
  • Tree (from the line “And the first tree in the greenwood, it was the holly” in the Sans Day Carol by John Rutter)

Verse beginnings in O come, all ye faithful:

  • O (verse 1: O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant!)
  • God (verse 2: God of God, Light of Light)
  • Sing (verse 6: Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation)
  • Yea (verse 7: Yea, Lord, we greet Thee, born this happy morning)

Add an “L” to make a word associated with Christmas (inspired by “Noel” or “no ‘L’”):

  • God (gold)
  • Ange (angel)
  • Holy (holly)
  • Cod (cold)

Things born by a holly in The holly and the ivy:

  • Bark
  • Prickle
  • Blossom
  • Berry

Well done to everyone who entered, and a special congratulations to our second set of winners: Linda H from West Sussex (UK), Nicola L from La Haye (France), and Elizabeth S from Queensland (Australia).

We wish you a very merry Christmas!

I had three groups out of the four but couldn’t connect the ‘first’ set. Very frustrating! But good to see the answers!

  2. Peggy Holloway

I had all the connections but found a different song for “The first thing.”

  3. Viv Kyte

Ah, got three sets but not the first. I went with “Christmas” as a guess… doesn’t everyone have a Christmas “thing”? 😃

Well done to the winners (and to everyone else who nearly got there and who will finally get a good night’s sleep!).
