Reflections

For piano and orchestra

In this joyous and colourful piano concerto, John Rutter both reflects, and reflects upon, the many sound-worlds and styles that have inspired him. The 40-minute work, in four movements, is virtuosic for the soloist, while displaying the composer’s masterful realisation of the full potential of the symphony orchestra. There are echoes of Ravel, Gershwin, Satie, Ibert, and many others, absorbed into an idiom that remains distinctively his own.

Christmas Child

Christmas Child is a macaronic carol that encourages us to ‘sing, rejoice at our Saviour’s coming’. This lyrical retelling of the Christmas story was commissioned by the Yale Institute of Sacred Music to honour David Hill, Past Professor Adjunct of Choral Conducting and Principal Conductor Emeritus of Yale Schola Cantorum. An orchestral accompaniment is available on hire/rental.

Lead, kindly light

for TTBB choir unaccompanied
With a text by John Henry Newman, Lead, kindly Light is a short, moving piece perfectly suited for our current times. Step-like movement in the melody reflects the speaker seeking light in the darkness, slow but steady in their way out of the ‘encircling gloom’.

Be not afeard

for SATBarB unaccompanied
The shades of Finzi and Vaughan Williams are strongly present in this delightful madrigal for unaccompanied choir. Offprinted from Rutter’s Three Shakespeare SongsBe not afeard casts a dreamy spell with dusky sonorities and magical harmonies.
