Give me wings

Written for Children’s International Voices, this delightfully uplifting piece will appeal to children’s choirs everywhere. A highly singable melody alternates between unison and two parts, and the words, written by the composer, are full of excited optimism for the future. Rutter skilfully combines a flowing character with a strong rhythmic pulse, and the piano accompaniment provides harmonic support throughout.

Look to the day

Written at the invitation of Cancer Research UK, Look to the day is a tuneful and uplifting anthem with warm harmonies. The words, written by the composer, project a strong central message of hope, ideal for thanksgiving services.

Cantique de Jean Racine (SATB)

Cantique de Jean Racine was written in 1865 during Fauré’s final year at the École Niedermeyer, winning him the first prize for composition. This elegant work now holds a cherished place in the choral repertory for both sacred and secular occasions. Presented with an English singing translation in addition to the original French, Rutter’s edition includes an accompaniment for organ or piano. The work may also be performed with a transcription for harp and strings (available separately), compatible with the instrumentation for the OUP edition of the Fauré Requiem in its 1893 version. Also available in a version for upper voices: SSAA.

Lord, thou hast been our refuge

Commissioned by the Worshipful Company of Barbers in celebration of their 700th anniversary and first performed at the United Guilds Service in St Paul’s Cathedral in March 2008, this is an impressive and stately setting of verses from Psalm 90, culminating in a jubilant, maestoso final section. The work would suit any festive service or concert.

John Rutter here sets this timeless and beloved text from Ecclesiastes with a gently flowing melody. The result is a simple and lovely general anthem that perfectly encapsulates the paired images of the text.

El Noi de la Mare (Carol of the Gifts)

The King of Blis

This lively and uplifting carol sets a joyful fifteenth-century Christmas text by James Ryman. The music is rhythmic and powerful, with moments of rich and vibrant harmony offset by the strong, fanfare-like Latin refrain. The King of Blis is guaranteed to prove a popular choice with choirs and audiences.

Suite Lyrique

Suite Lyrique is a work in six movements for harp and strings, with music taken from the composer’s Suite Antique of 1979 for flute, harpsichord, and strings. The six movements – Prelude, Ostinato, Aria, (Jazz) Waltz, Chanson, and Rondeau – explore different moods and exploit the harp’s sound world and capabilities to the full to create a highly attractive and joyful concert work.

Most glorious Lord of life

This Easter anthem is a triumphant setting of words by Edmund Spenser and St John Damascene for mixed choir and organ. Featuring joyful choral parts and an optional soprano solo, Most glorious Lord of life ends with a new harmonization of the Easter hymn tune ‘Ellacombe’, with an optional congregational part.
